Boys Rooms: Contemporary Chairs

Room to Bloom: Best chairs for playrooms

In her monthly series, interior designer Ursula Wesselingh chooses six of the best chairs for playrooms and bedrooms.

Seating might seem like the easy bit when planning a room for children, but it requires real thought. It is important to think about how they spend their time. Is your child an avid reader? Does he sit and listen to music or have a room full of friends around to watch movies at the weekend? Or are there younger siblings who like to sit next to him and follow the pictures of a storybook? We look at six of the best chairs for boys bedrooms and playrooms below.

Room to Bloom: best chairs for kids rooms

  1. Bubble chair (after the design by Eero Aarnio), £632.50 (Go for the real thing, but prepare yourself for the price tag: Eero Aarnio Bubble Chair, £4050)

This chair will give any playroom the wow factor, but be prepared for fights over who gets to sit in it – or bite the bullet and get one per child. Hang from a hook (that can take at least 120kg), a beam or a joist, just make sure you use a ceiling joist finder or a professional tradesman to hang it for you.

  1. Ikea Flaxig balance chair, £45

Designed for balance training for kids over 8, it’s actually a very comfortable place for just hanging out and reading. The styling has elements of car racing and space exploration. Make sure you use it with a rug to avoid scratching the floor.

  1. Mini Acapulco Chair, £162 from MOOD

This retro style works brilliantly with modern interiors and can also be used outdoors – choose the colour to suit your scheme. Use a soft sheepskin or a handful of cushions to create a lazy spot in the sun. Here’s one where form and function are perfectly matched.

  1. Osmaston Sofa in Navy, £545

This traditional style junior sofa in on-trend navy would look great in a more traditional playroom or eclectic interior that mixes old and new. Available in many fabrics, you can choose one to suit your scheme. Great for small children who like to feel a bit more grown up.

  1. Ligne Roset Mini Togo Fireside Chair, £643

Seriously cool lounging for boys bedrooms or playrooms, in black it’s the perfect key piece in a monochrome scheme, and it’s extremely comfortable to curl up on and watch a movie…

  1. Laurette Butterfly chair, €149

The mini version of this design classic comes in three colours, and again, can be used in a playroom or outdoors. If you have never sat in a butterfly chair, try it: there’s nothing quite so enveloping – it’s the perfect Sunday chill out chair.
