One of our favourite things about autumn is spending more time huddled up under a blanket reading a book with the kids. This week interior designer Ursula Wesselingh chooses 6 of the best blankets and throws for kids rooms.
A super easy way to refresh the kids’ bedrooms this autumn is by adding some new bedding. With a blanket or throw a bed is made in a wink, and they’re great for snuggling up together too. Layering bedding by mixing and (mis)matching colours, prints and textures is a hot trend in children’s interiors, and there are a few ways to do it. For a coherent look, stick to bedding in similar or complementary colours that echo one of the colours in the room. Next, mix plain with pattern, smooth with textured, and accent with cushions to create a comfortable corner, cosy nook or beautiful bed.
1. Pink Rain blanket (114x88cm), €62
This graphic design in knitted cotton will brighten up a nursery or toddler bed – team with smaller pattern and plain bedding. Cute animal cushions and other room décor available in coordinating colours.
Caramel’s classic blanket in textured boiled wool comes in three seasonal colours. Add a flash of colour with this emerald green version, though the monochrome stripes are tempting too.
3. Fabelab Storytelling blanket – Dreamer (2 sizes), from £50
Fabelab’s Storytelling blankets feature embroidered characters and shapes that thread a little story. The on-trend colours are easy to mix and match with bedding from other brands. Made from 100% organic cotton with polyester filling, available in three colourways and 2 sizes.
Subtle detailing and stunning colours are the hallmark of children’s interiors brand Camomile London. This teal-on-teal quilt is inspired by classic eiderdowns. It adds extra warmth to a cot or bed, and is ideal as a playmat. Available in an array of colours that work with all of Camomile’s bedding.
Add a fresh gender-neutral touch to the nursery with this playful reversible Dog blanket. Made from GOTS certified organic cotton fleece, it also makes soft playmat or pram blanket. The black and white version is gorgeous too – perfect for a monochrome bedroom.
6. OYOY Pearl plaid (120x160cm), €107
Another gender-neutral design from Scandinavia. Combine this colourful cotton plaid with bedding in any of its colours to bring in some sunshine, or snuggle up on the sofa. Matching cushions available.Ursula Wesselingh is an interior designer specialising in children’s spaces. Follow Ursula on twitter @roomtobloom or visit her website.
